UNESCO invited all talented architects from all over the world to participate in the international architectural competition, which is held specifically for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Al-Nuri Mosque complex in the Iraqi city of Mosul, where the UAE is financing the reconstruction project.

Joining the initiative to "revive the spirit of Mosul" is a unique opportunity to make a change in the lives of the city's residents, and to help them rebuild their city after its liberation from ISIS.

Those wishing to participate must present a theoretical design for the complex, taking into account the preservation of the existing parts of the Nuri Mosque and the concern for its compatibility with the new buildings, in addition to the rehabilitation of a number of historical buildings and their integration with new designs.

The competition also includes preparing a design for the general landscape of the entire site, as well as creating new spaces for the local community to be used for educational, cultural and social activities. The project envisages allocating these spaces to serve the local community in several ways, not limited to the main religious function of the site.

The application period will remain open until March 26, 2021, and an international jury consisting of nine members and two alternate members will select the winning design and the designs that will win the following four places.

The Minister of Culture and Youth, Noura bint Muhammad Al-Kaabi, said: “The International Architectural Competition for the Design of the Al-Nuri Mosque Complex is based on our vision, with the necessity to involve the Iraqi community and international designers and architects in the efforts to rebuild this historical icon, allowing us to complete the project in cooperation with our partners according to the highest standards of restoration of sites. The archaeological practice in the UNESCO ... the architectural competition carries a strong message full of indications of solidarity and cooperation among all to draw the future that the people of Mosul deserve. This competition expresses the universal entitlement and its required role towards preserving heritage and preserving cultural resources.

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, said: “The initiative to reconstruct and rehabilitate this important historical complex sends a strong message calling for resilience and adherence to hope. With steadfastness and hope, we take our first step towards achieving social cohesion and reconciliation in post-conflict Iraq.

Of course, historical sites and monuments embody a strong symbol of belonging, society and identity, and their rehabilitation will facilitate the recovery of the memory of the people of Mosul, who were once part of a developing and vibrant city. ”

The Iraqi Minister of Culture, Hassan Nazim, said: “This architectural competition represents an opportunity for all talented people in this world to participate in the reconstruction of the Al-Nuri Mosque and its humpback minaret.

As we rebuild this historical edifice, we restore the prestige of the Iraqi heritage and appreciate it due to its value, especially the heritage in the city of Mosul, and we revive the memory of the people and restore the destruction left by the (ISIS) organization.
