  • Alain P., who weighs more than 300 kg, is stuck on the ground, in an unsanitary apartment.

  • The evacuation of the fifty-year-old, requested by his relatives and his lawyer for more than a year, should take place in a fortnight.

    But it is complex.

  • His state of health is worrying, according to a doctor who observed him.

A crane will soon come to deliver Alain P. from the hell he has been living for over a year.

This man, who weighs nearly 300 kg, is stranded at home, in an unsanitary apartment in a building in the Saint-Jacques district, in Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales).

A fall, which broke his leg, immobilized him to the ground.

Since then, this 50-year-old can not move, and it is his relatives who take care of him.

On October 22, while he had been moving heaven and earth for more than a year for the State to evacuate Alain P. to a hospital, his lawyer, Jean Codognès, wrote to Gérald Darmanin, the Minister of the Interior, to demand that we look into the fate of this man.

A complaint for "non-assistance to person in danger" and "failure to bring assistance to person in danger", with which was associated the League against obesity, had followed.

"It's as if they want him to die at home, it becomes a criminal case."

We no longer know what to do, ”his brother lamented to the association on October 30.

A complex evacuation

A few weeks later, the state moves.

An operation is planned, a priori, in a fortnight, to evacuate Alain P. to the hospital in Montpellier (Hérault).

“Probably December 1,” says

Jean Codognès.

But his evacuation, which had been planned, then postponed, this summer, is complex.

And it is not without risks.

It is indeed impossible to transport it by the stairs.

It is a crane which will take charge of Alain P., in this narrow street of the Saint-Jacques district.

“The building will be reinforced, with metal feet, on the ground floor and on the first floor,” explains his lawyer.

Part of the facade will be removed, to slide it, in a container, placed in the extension of the room in which it is located.

It is a crane which will then bring the container down to the street.

His state of health is alarming

At the beginning of November, “a dozen people, including professors from the center specializing in obesity at the Montpellier University Hospital, an anesthetist, doctors from the Perpignan hospital, firefighters who are experts in rescues at risk, but also the services of the department and the town hall of Perpignan, as well as a company manager of lifting equipment, went to the patient's bedside […] to establish […] an evacuation scenario and a precise diagnosis », Indicates the League against obesity, which has strongly mobilized for the State services to act.

If his evacuation somewhat relieves AlainP.

and gives him "hope", says his lawyer, he remains in a critical situation.

A doctor at the beginning of November described his condition as "imminent peril".

According to the League Against Obesity, this doctor observed that his obesity “has been on the rise for over a year […].

The patient has been sitting on the floor since that date […].

He has bedsores, superinfections of folds and serious trophic disorders ”.

The doctor had also pointed out, according to the association, "restrictive respiratory failure with 87% saturation".

"We could not fail to denounce this situation, inhuman and unacceptable in the twenty-first century, underlined, on November 10, the general director of the League against obesity, Agnès Maurin.

This example is symptomatic of the drama of obesity.

I hope that it will awaken the consciences, because it is about a disease which is not recognized by the State like a chronic pathology, not supported, without necessary care.

We can arrive at extreme situations like this, cases that are all the more invisible to society because they are small people, poorer, more isolated.
