The Emirates Literature Foundation is organizing the pioneering project for resident writers “From the Inside Out” for the second year in a row, this week. Two female writers have supervised a week in Dubai Central Prison on intensive creative writing workshops with a group of inmates.

The project, which is being held in cooperation with the General Department of Punitive and Correctional Institutions in Dubai Police, is the first initiative of its kind in the Arab world.

The course is moderated this year by editor Alison K.

Williams and author Jessica Garelfi under the slogan 'Let's change the story' is the theme for the 2021 Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. Another writing workshop will be held for Arabic-speaking guests in December.

Isabelle Abualhoul (a recipient of the Order of the British Empire), CEO and member of the Board of Trustees of the Emirates Literature Foundation, said about the project in its last year that it was an experiment with satisfactory and influential results, and she continued: “We are all greatly affected by this project.

Many inmates found that the process of writing down their ideas and experiences constituted a major transformation in their lives, as it provided new insights and enabled them to invest their expertise and experiences in a very beneficial way. Writing had a positive effect on the inmates' rehabilitation, which helped them pave their new life path outside the walls.

Literary writing workshops to empower inmates and hone their creative talents.
