In Rennes, a collective of independent delivery men has come together to get rid of Deliveroo and UberEats.

The Rennais Couriers

  • In Rennes, independent delivery people unite around a collective to extricate themselves from platforms like Deliveroo and UberEats.

  • Called Les Coursiers Rennes, this collective will launch on Monday with Angello pizzerias, before expanding to other restaurants.

  • Delivery people are increasingly critical of national platforms which do not pay them with dignity.

Nantes, Lille, Paris, Angers… In recent years, most French cities have seen independent delivery people come together to set up their independent platform for home meal deliveries.

Rennes did not have one but the “anomaly” will soon be corrected.

As of Monday, a collective called “Les coursiers rennais” will offer restaurants in the Breton capital an alternative to the giants of Deliveroo, UberEats or even JustEat.

A choice assumed in the face of the deterioration of their working conditions.

“We have seen the platform pricing framework evolve lately.

And not in the right direction for us, ”explains Hugo, one of the founders of Coursiers Rennes.

For the time being, only ten delivery people have integrated the approach in a city where there are around 500 more or less active licenses.

They claim delivery by bike, where scooters are coming in force, and want to improve remuneration.

“With Deliveroo, we have no visibility on our income.

The calculation methods are very complex and depend on many criteria.

Sometimes you have to wait fifty minutes to do a paid ride for 2.50 euros.

We cannot be satisfied with it, ”continues Hugo.

"We did not want to guarantee that delivery men are paid with a slingshot"

Monday evening, it is a champion of France who will send his specialties in the bags of the Rennes couriers.

Elected best pizza maker in France in 2014, Yann Dayer had to close his two Angello pizzerias due to confinement.

The one who had always refused to make delivery finally changed point of view by crossing the path of independent couriers.

“We didn't want to for ecological reasons because we didn't want to put scooters or cars on the roads.

But also because we did not want to guarantee that delivery men are paid with a slingshot, ”assumes Françoise Dayer, owner of the two restaurants in Rennes.

After opening up to take-away sales thanks to its online sales site set up by the Rennais de TocTok, Angello will test what many pizzerias have been doing for a long time: take-out.

“It's a bet for us but we believe in it.

We are convinced that there are people to consume differently, ”explains Françoise Dayer.

Because independence comes at a cost.

To pay their deliverers with dignity, Les Coursiers Rennes will invoice each delivery between six and ten euros depending on the distance, at the customer's expense.

“The other platforms sometimes display a delivery of 4 euros but they also take 30% from the restaurant owner.

We want to be more transparent.

You have to explain the real price of things.

Especially since we can see that some people feel guilty when they order, ”said Hugo.

One restaurant, soon more

After a first test with Angello, Les Coursiers Rennes will quickly open up to other brands, in particular those registered in the “Your restaurant at home” system set up during confinement and which brings together around fifteen Rennes restaurants.

A first step towards freedom.
