Like the Senegalese Léopold Sédar Senghor, the Cameroonian Ahmadou Ahidjo or even Félix Houphouët-Boigny for the Ivory Coast, Moktar Ould Daddah (1924-2003) belongs to the generation of political leaders resulting from decolonization in Africa.

He had a decisive role in the birth of the Republic of Mauritania which he will lead for 17 years, from 1961 to 1978.
