Alabai is a Turkmen variant of the Central Asian herding dog and the breed is listed as one of the country's cultural heritage.

President Berdymukhamedov has long been a staunch supporter and has previously written a book on the excellence of dogs.

But on Tuesday, the president went one step further.

Financed by the banks

A gold statue of the dog was unveiled in the capital, Ashgabat.

According to the country's media, the statue should reflect the breed's pride and self-confidence.

The statue is located in a roundabout in a residential area for government officials and is financed by the country's banks.

There is no information on how much the project has cost, according to the BBC.

The president has previously erected a 21-meter-high statue of himself in the center of the capital.

Compared to North Korea

Former dictator Berdymukhamedov has ruled the former Soviet republic of Central Asia since 2006, when the country's then-president, Saparmurat Nijazov, died.

Turkmenistan is one of the most closed countries in the world and is often compared to North Korea.
