  • The city of Rennes will set up its 5G study mission on Friday.

  • Composed of elected officials and citizens, it will be responsible for studying all the advantages and disadvantages of the deployment of this technology.

  • Its findings will be made public on March 29.

If the frequencies have been allocated and can be operated from November 18 by operators, the controversy over 5G is not extinct.

This is particularly the case in Rennes where the subject divides.

“Neither for nor against”, Mayor Nathalie Appéré announced on September 21 the launch of an impact study on 5G.

"As we did for 3G or 4G, I want all the light to be shed on this technology because I consider that the citizen has the right to be informed and to issue an opinion before its deployment", had she then explained.

Two months later, the study mission is in working order before its official installation scheduled for Friday.

Led by Pierre Janin, the elected representative in charge of digital, it “will seek to identify the advantages, disadvantages, opportunities and risks associated with the deployment of this new technology”, indicates the city of Rennes in a press release.

"It will have to estimate, in the short and long term, its impacts on the life of Rennes, in terms of uses, economic development, public health, environment, energy, quality of life of residents, safety , ethics… and position itself on the major challenges for the future posed by the debate, ”she continues.

The conclusions presented on March 29

For four months, 40 people, including 20 elected from the municipal council and 16 residents drawn by lot, will therefore participate in thematic workshops in the presence of experts in order to address all the subjects raised by 5G.

At the end of its work, the study mission will write a summary report which will be made public and presented to the municipal council on March 29.

In view of these elements, the city of Rennes will then decide on the conditions for the deployment of 5G on its territory.

Because if it does not have all the cards in hand, the deployment falling within the competence of the State, the municipality still has enough to put pressure on the operators.

"Authorizations will be needed to deploy antennas on municipal heritage and this is the responsibility of local authorities", has already warned Nathalie Appéré.
