A team of computer scientists from MIT in the United States has developed an algorithm that can determine if a person has Covid-19 just by listening to the sound of their cough.

The aim is to integrate it in the future into a consumer application.

What if a good cough was enough to know if you have Covid-19?

If the human ear cannot differentiate between coronavirus and a sore throat, artificial intelligence could be able to.

A team of researchers from MIT, in the United States, has just developed an algorithm capable of making a diagnosis on the basis of sound extracts.

By analyzing 5,000 cough records, this program identified 98.5% of Covid-19 patients with symptoms.

Even more impressive, the algorithm spotted 100% of asymptomatic patients, whose cough sound is different.

The development of the program will take a few months

The researchers would like their work to result in a smartphone app that would detect Covid-19 instantly, by listening to a cough.

A positive result should of course be confirmed in the laboratory.

The development will take a few more months, but the trail is serious.

Swiss researchers from the Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne are also working on a similar application.
