  • Forecast: poor outlook from experts for winter

"There

is significant evidence

of the transmission of SARS-Cov-2 infection via aerosols."

That is the blunt conclusion of a report prepared by top-level Spanish infectious disease experts.

The research, in fact, indicates that "there is substantial support from the scientific community" that aerosol transmission is

"the most common form of contagion in super-spread events

."

At the moment, and despite the claims of various groups of scientists, the World Health Organization (WHO) does not explicitly recognize aerosol transmission as an important route of transmission, although it does recommend adequate ventilation of closed spaces, a measure linked to prevent this type of spread.

The new one, commissioned by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, reviews the available evidence on the transmission routes of the virus and, after verifying the importance of aerosols as a means of contagion, recommends imposing additional prevention measures to those already implemented (use of masks, social distancing, etc).

Thus, it indicates that it is necessary to promote outdoor activities and ventilate or filter the interiors to reduce the transmission by aerosols.

"Isn't it worth promoting outdoor activities, ventilating or filtering to reduce aerosol transmission? We can reduce risks if these measures are added to those already accepted for the use of masks, hygiene, distancing, remote work and avoidance of high-risk events. density of people, especially indoors? ", states the text, signed by Antonio Alcamí, Margarita del Val, Miguel Hernán, Pello Latassa, José Luis Jiménez, Xavier Querol, Ana Robustillo, Gloria Sánchez and Alfonso Valencia.

The document also highlights the importance of fitting the mask properly (aerosols could penetrate through the gaps of a mask that is too loose), as well as calls for a "government effort" to increase the quality of the masks in use by the population given the great variation in filtration and facial adaptability of different types of cloth masks, with some reaching very high levels of filtration "while others filter only 10% of aerosols."

Public Health agencies in the US, Germany and the United Kingdom already point to aerosols as one of the main routes of spread of SARS-CoV-2.
