Angèle and Dua Lipa, behind the scenes of the shooting of their video Fever.

  • Dua Lipa and Angèle wrote

    Fever which

    they sing in duet.

  • They worked on this song in the midst of a health crisis.

“We communicated by SMS to talk about our ideas.

It was completely in tune with the times.

It may be necessary to get used to such collaborations being done like that, ”says Dua Lipa.

  • "We share a way of approaching our work, of getting by by being young women in the music industry with the pressure that that can involve", declares Angèle.

In our confined routines, Saturday night fever seems far away.

Dua Lipa and Angèle, they began to sing their

Fever

in duet to warm up the atmosphere.

Unintentional irony: the song was put online last Friday at midnight, just as the second lockdown came into force in France.

In the clip unveiled this Friday at 2pm, the Briton and the Belgian play the night owls in the streets of London and bring us back to our nights "from the world before".

"This shoot was my last outing, my last" party ", I will not soon forget it", slips Angèle who, with Dua Lipa, gave an exclusive interview to

20 Minutes

.

Interview crossed by interposed screens.

What did you know and what did you think of each other before working together?

Angèle:

I've been following what Dua Lipa is doing for a while.

I discovered it with

New Rules

[2017].

His second album [

Future Nostalgia

, released in the spring] is one that I have listened to a lot this year.

Dua Lipa:

I knew a bit about his shows, of which I saw videos online.

It was my first introduction to what she does.

I liked the music, the clips, his feminist approach to things.

I love that she has such an identity and a lot of personality.

I love who she is and after meeting her I can tell that she is very clear on all of this which is what makes her so special and true.

How did you work together, especially in the writing process?

Dua Lipa:

Because of the Covid, we couldn't get together in one place to create this song.

We had to work in our respective homes.

I was in the United States and Angèle, I suppose, in Paris.

Angèle:

I was between Paris and Belgium, as usual.

Dua Lipa:

Yes, in between.

We communicated by SMS to talk about our ideas.

It was an interesting collaborative experience: we were so far away, but we were able to meet on this song.

I loved.

It was completely in tune with the times.

You may have to get used to (

she smiles

) that such collaborations are done like that, especially with the limitations of movement.

Angèle:

It could be a little frustrating not to meet to do the song, but ultimately, since we kept in touch a lot and it was very simple from the start - musically, it immediately matched -, it was indeed super interesting.

It was my first time working like this.

What I really liked was that there was kind of a ping pong effect.

As usual, I worked a bit with Tristan [Salvati, producer and pianist].

When we were in the studio, I suggested things like adding keyboards because I needed to reclaim things musically, and it was always very well received.

Vocally, there is this gimmick in French that I brought and that Dua ended up singing in French too.

She also added things on her side.

It was a great approach while being at a distance, each on a different continent and time zone.

It gave a little hope in this complicated period to say that we can continue to do things, even if these are exercises to which we are not used.

Dua Lipa:

It's great that we were able to create a song that has something unique and that sticks to our personalities, our respective styles, in the most authentic way possible.

What is the message of "Fever"?

Dua Lipa:

I think it's more of a feeling, an excitement.

It's about people coming together, whether it's because they love each other, because they get together with friends to go out… It brings to mind that moment when the energy and the adrenaline soar and you are feverish.

That's, I think the feeling is behind it all: the excitement and the fun is what you want people to feel when they listen to the song.

Angèle:

It's also a question of connection between two people.

This kind of fever also speaks of heat.

There is something of the order of human warmth, of trance.

The fever is an allegory of a strong human moment between two people, it can be friendly, romantic, family ...

It seems that the connection has worked well between you ...

Dua Lipa:

Absolutely!

We had the chance to really get to know each other during the whole process of creating the song and the music video.

It was so cool to be able to talk like two friends, without it necessarily being related to work.

Everything you see in the clip, we tried to recreate it in real life.

Angèle:

What comes through in the clip is real, nothing is played - well obviously there are things that are played, but nothing is exaggerated, it's very natural.

We were able to spend time with each other, we are the same age, we do the same job, so obviously that creates links.

It was a bit lunar to find yourself shooting this clip in the cold, in the streets of London, in the middle of the night.

There was something very exciting.

We laughed a lot.

It did me good, it had been a long time since I last shot.

What's great is that we had to work together and we end up being friends.

You are the same age, you are two singers… What else do you have in common?

Dua Lipa and Angèle

(at the same time): The dogs!

(

they burst out laughing

)

Dua Lipa:

We love dogs, we are obsessed with our puppies.

(

Takes a more serious tone

) We are feminists.

We also love fashion.

We enjoy so many things that we can talk about together, even if they are light things.

Angèle:

We laugh because our affection for dogs has become a kind of running gag.

Otherwise, I would say that when you meet someone, you don't necessarily have to explain.

Obviously, when we make music, it helps, it's something that brings people together, we understand each other.

I think we also share a way of approaching our work, of coping with being young women in the music industry with the pressure that can involve.

I think that's what made everything so simple and natural, whether it was doing the music video, the music and talking about it afterwards.

In the clip, there are only women.

Why ?

Dua Lipa:

We see women doing jobs that are considered unconventional for them in the sense that they are supposed to be male.

There is, I think, the will to break the stigma, to go in the direction of inclusiveness.

Being surrounded by women makes things so much safer, especially in the evening.

Things are so much easier and more carefree because you don't have to worry about other factors.

I'm not saying it happens every night, but it's very common for something to happen or being whistled on the street ruining your evening.

Angèle:

The clip is a utopia: it shows two young women in the street, having fun, not asking any questions.

As we know, times are difficult and it is also a dream.

Perhaps this is the idea that directors Pierre and Clément [of We Are From LA] wanted to express.

In this clip, you are two women going out to party.

How do you feel in this period of confinements, quarantines and curfews?

Dua Lipa:

This period is a challenge for everyone since we have to adapt to this new way of living.

I don't think I'm the only one to say that I feel terribly nostalgic for things as they were before.

I really like this clip that we shot because we played this fantasy of going out that we knew, when we party with our best friends, that we live the moment fully, without anything other does not matter.

Angèle:

Despite the - necessary - constraints to be respected, this filming made it possible, at the time, to make a leap into the past, that of the time when we were carefree and carefree and where we probably did not realize either the luck we had.

This shoot was my last outing, my last "party", I won't soon forget!

Dua, you had to postpone your live concerts for a year.

But you have announced a virtual concert, "Studio2054", for November 27th.

Will you be seen singing with Angèle on one of these occasions?

Dua Lipa:

Yes!

My performance with Angèle will even be, for me, one of the highlights of

Studio2054

.

I missed Performing so much, that's why I'm so excited about this show.

It gives me the opportunity to bring together musicians and other artists - dancers, roller-skaters, acrobats and surprise guests - to create a special event to share with everyone.

Angèle:

I can't wait to be able to perform with Dua during

Studio 2054

.

Going back on stage, singing, dancing, it's been so long.

It will do us a lot of good and I hope that the spectators will be able to enjoy this moment from home, which will be different from all the lives we have seen so far.

I understand that there will be plenty of surprises and I am honored to be able to be part of such an event.
