At 6 o'clock in the morning on the 2nd, Gan Zongheng, a senior agronomist from the Hengnan County Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Hengyang, Hunan, rushed to the Zimuchong Group of Qingzhu Village in the county to participate in a field "examination": China's third-generation hybrid rice "Sanyou No. 1" Heng Nanxian Double-season Late Rice Experimental Demonstration Base (hereinafter referred to as "base") ushered in on-site production testing.

Food security concerns the survival of 1.4 billion Chinese people.

The hybrid rice cultivated by the expert team of "Father of Hybrid Rice" Yuan Longping, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, has now gone through three generations.

The third-generation hybrid rice began seed selection in 2011 and trial planting began in 2017. "Sanyou No. 1" is its excellent variety.

In October 2019, "Sanyou No. 1" has achieved excellent results of 1046.3 kg per mu in the base.

The base is presided over by the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center (Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center), with Yuan Longping as the chief expert, and the implementation of it by the Hengnan County Agriculture and Rural Bureau.

"There are 14 technicians in the base. We have a clear division of labor and work together to care for the growth of the'Three You One'." Gan Zongheng said.

The production site is overcast and sometimes rainy, which makes Gan Zongheng quite worried. The loss rate of harvesting rice on rainy days is much greater than that on sunny days.

What worries him even more is that the "Sanyou No. 1" tested this time, as a double-season late rice, has one week less growth period than single-season late rice; the effective light time of late rice in the tested production plot this year only accounts for about 20% of previous years , The cumulative temperature is also reduced to a certain extent.

Chen Taijia, a villager of Suhu Village who "rushed for the exam" together, is the specific manager of the base.

He said that "Sanyou No. 1" is not much different from ordinary rice cultivation, and the amount of fertilizer applied is almost the same.

"I hope to wait for a good result. Just like our farmers are farming, we all look forward to a good harvest in the harvest season."

Among the "references", there is also the expert team of Yuan Longping who has cultivated the "Three Excellent One" with great concentration.

Yuan Longping, 90 years old this year, was in the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center in Changsha early that morning to watch the production test on live TV.

Compared with other "candidates", Yuan Lao appears very confident: "Although it is raining, the impact will not be significant. The double-season rice sprint yields 3,000 jin per mu. I have a 95% confidence."

In fact, Yuan Longping's expert team is both the "test taker" and the "tester".

Yuan Longping has openly talked about his two dreams many times: one is the "dream of enjoying the coolness under the grass" in pursuit of high-yield super rice; the other is the "dream of covering the whole world" that allows super rice to go abroad and benefit the world.

On his 90th birthday this year, he promised a double-cropping hybrid rice yield of more than 3,000 jin per mu.

The production measurement process includes round-trip inspection, impurity removal and weighing, and moisture measurement, which takes about 3 hours.

According to the evaluation by the production testing expert group, the yield per mu of "Sanyou No. 1" is 911.7 kg.

Earlier, the yield per mu of early rice varieties grown in the same base was 619.06 kg.

This means that the double-season yield per mu has reached 1530.76 kg.

"More than excited!" Yuan Longping was very excited when he heard the news.

For decades, the "post-90s" has never stopped pursuing dreams, and has continuously set new records in the super-high yield of hybrid rice.

This result means that the Chinese have held their jobs more firmly.

According to Yuan Lao's words, the successful production test means that the third-generation hybrid rice has made a new breakthrough. The average yield per mu is 10% to 20% higher than the existing high-yield hybrid rice, that is, an increase of more than 100 kg.

"There are 250 million mu of hybrid rice in China, with an increase of 100 kg per mu, which can increase the grain output of Hunan Province by half."

The expert team of Yuan Longping, who successfully completed the "big exam", will soon open the new "exam questions".

"Next there are steps to break through." Yuan Longping said that the team will promote Hengnan's experience and make new contributions to national food security.
