Dear Fubuki Katana

by Annelise Heurtier, published in August 2019 by Éditions Casterman.

Her favorite quote:

“No one wanted to bother with other people's problems.

No one should embarrass others with their problems.

And that was why we learned to keep them inside.

The problems did not show themselves.

"

Why this book?

  • Because this novel is a real dive into Japanese culture

and you are not immune to learning new notions in a country where being harassed, and therefore victim, is a humiliating thing that must be hidden.

Emi, the heroine, is put on the sidelines and constant pressure from her comrades and cannot confide in the adults around her.

  • Because this novel upsets.

Annelise Heurtier's pen is formidably effective when it comes to conveying the heroine's emotions to a reader who begins to carry the weight of Emi's shame and dismay on his own shoulders.

The daily life of this young woman, victim of young executioners who act as they please without the intervention of the teachers, revolts as much as it despairs.

  • Because this novel conveys strong and necessary messages

on the importance of not being afraid to speak out when one is subjected to a form of bullying and in particular here, bullying at school.

It proves that we can all use a lot of courage to get out of a difficult situation and that it is possible to find people to listen, even when the situation seems hopeless.
