Preventing wheel-off accidents of large vehicles, which are common in winter, to strengthen the call from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism November 1, 16:35

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will strengthen the call for accident prevention from November 1st, as there are many accidents in which the tires of large vehicles such as trucks come off while driving, especially in winter, so precautions when changing tires. It was decided.

On the 1st, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism conducted an experiment on a test course in Saitama Prefecture to visualize the danger of a tire coming off accident.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, there were 112 accidents in which tires came off due to broken bolts or loose nuts last year, the highest number since we started collecting statistics, with one seriously injured and four injured.

In the experiment, a truck traveling at 60 km / h was suddenly stopped, and the impact of a tire hitting a doll and a stroller 30 meters away from it was investigated.

When the doll and the stroller hit a tire that weighs about 90 kilograms, they moved about 4 meters and bent and collapsed to break.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, 67% of the accidents that occurred last year are from October to February, when the tires are replaced with winter tires, so this experiment and the tire installation method and precautions were made into a video. We are going to strengthen the call for prevention.

Ryuji Takase, assistant manager of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's Automobile Bureau Maintenance Division, said, "In winter, it is thought that work will be insufficient due to rushing to change tires due to the weather forecast, which will lead to an accident. I want to reduce accidents. "

Past derailment accident trends and analysis

In the past, fatal accidents have occurred in accidents where tires come off due to broken wheel bolts or nuts connecting the wheels and axles.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, a 3-year-old boy died in 2004 when he was hit by a tire that came off a dump truck running in Hokkaido, and in 2008, a tire that came off a truck was visited in Shizuoka prefecture. A direct hit on the bus killed the bus driver and injured seven passengers.

The number of accidents in which tires come off has been increasing for the past 10 years, and in 2011 there were 11 accidents nationwide, but last year there were 112 accidents, the highest number since 1999 when statistics were first collected.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's analysis of last year's accidents, 67% of the accidents occurred from October to February, and 60% of the accidents occurred within a month after changing tires.

In addition, 96% of the tires that came off were on the left rear wheel and sidewalk side, which are prone to load.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has set a "wheel fall accident prevention campaign" from November to the end of February next year, and when changing tires, tighten the nuts with a special tool with a specified force, and 50 to 100 kg. We will strengthen the call for accident prevention on leaflets, posters, homepages, etc. that show specific precautions, such as tightening the nuts again after driving.

A company that strengthened countermeasures in the wake of an accident

Companies that have had an accident in which a tire comes off are strengthening accident prevention measures.

At the transportation company "Shimizu Transport" in Saitama Prefecture, an accident occurred in December when a large truck going to pick up cargo was driving on a general road in the prefecture and the rear tire on the left side came off.

The tires that came off weighed 100 kilograms and stopped in the bushes on the side of the road, and no one was injured, but President Eiji Shimizu said, "I was horrified because if there were people, I would die in the worst case." I will.

The cause was that the nuts were loosely tightened when I changed to winter tires the day before the accident.

At a meeting held at the company this week, we confirmed that we would replace the tires for winter based on the procedure manual that was prepared based on the lessons learned from the accident so that there would be no difference among employees.

In addition to tightening the nut with the specified force, a line is drawn on the nut and bolt with an oil-based pen so that the looseness caused by running can be visually confirmed.

President Shimizu said, "I never thought that the tires would come off at my company. If I make a mistake, it will lead to a big accident, so I want to change the winter tires in earnest with a sense of tension." I was talking.
