Containment, terrorism ... The French are going through a psychologically trying period, marked by great uncertainty.

For Hélène Romano, psychotherapist, this can seriously affect the mental health of French people.

The lightened confinement could thus be as striking as that of May.

INTERVIEW

The French have been facing particularly heavy news in recent weeks.

After several terrorist attacks, they are confined due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Episodes that can affect them psychologically, explains Hélène Romano, psychotherapist, specialist in psychological trauma invited on Saturday on Europe 1. "The confinement in itself is traumatic, in the sense that it is a form of mourning in terms of loss, explains -She. We lose our bearings, we lose our habits and we live in a certain uncertainty. "A feeling of psychic insecurity"

We will have to wait a few more weeks to find out how the French will experience the confinement there.

But Hélène Romano fears that this second period of isolation will have a psychological impact just as important as the first.

"We see that many people are in a form of incomprehension. This new confinement seems more flexible, but at the same time, it is almost less secure because there is not necessarily a consistency."

The metro, which represents a major risk of being contaminated, remains open.

Schools too.

The wearing of a mask was imposed on children over six years old when this measure was not considered useful before.

But other places are closed, such as bars and restaurants.

"The political decisions that are taken can seem very incoherent, even if they can be explained by certain issues", continues Hélène Romano.

"This inconsistency can reinforce a feeling of psychic insecurity. A confinement" with lukewarm water "is not necessarily a comfortable in-between," because there is no continuity in the decisions that are taken. ".

The first studies on the first confinement showed that it had a significant impact on the psychic life of children and adults, in terms of anxiety disorders, addictive disorders, etc.

And an impact also at the level of medical care, which can become "quite dramatic".

Faced with such uncertainties and in particular if one lives with children, it is crucial to make positive plans, not to sink into "disaster", insists the psychotherapist, because it can be "devastating" for them. children.

"History shows us that human beings always get away with it." It's very important to get out of the staggering impact of confinement, "adds Hélène Romano.
