What face will the second confinement have against the coronavirus in France?

On the first day of these restrictions, Friday, life slowed down markedly but, at the same time, independent businesses protested against their closure because of their non-essential nature, unlike large supermarkets.

Epidemic indicators continue to deteriorate in France, as in the United States, with a record of contaminations in 24 hours.

Follow the evolution of the situation live.

The main information to remember:

  • 36,565 deaths in France, 221 new patients in intensive care

  • France begins its first weekend of containment

  • Independent businesses are demanding their opening

  • Teleworking is compulsory, the mask also from 6 years old

  • Record in the United States with 90,000 contaminations, four days before the presidential election

Less hard confinement (and less respected?)

The lightened confinement took effect overnight from Thursday to Friday.

Scheduled "a minimum" until December 1, it is more flexible than that of March-April.

"The crossing of Paris this [Friday] morning looked more like an ordinary day than a first day of confinement", in the words of the director general of the AP-HP (Public Assistance - Hospitals of Paris), Martin Hirsch, on Twitter.

Europe 1 has seen it in the streets of Paris.

On the other hand, the crowd was significantly less than a normal day in public transport.

As during the first confinement, exemptions are possible for shopping, going to the doctor, but also getting air for "one hour maximum" and in "a radius of one kilometer from the home".

The fine will remain at 135 euros in the event of failure to provide a temporary certificate.

"Permanent certificates" can be issued by companies and schools.

We explain in this article what it is possible and impossible to do this weekend.

Anger rises among traders

Shops deemed "non-essential" (including bars and restaurants) will remain closed during confinement.

This measure caused an uproar among many traders, including booksellers, furious that large brands remain open and competition from online sales platforms.

Faced with the controversy, Fnac-Darty announced Friday to close "all the culture departments" of its stores, "for the sake of responsibility".

And the government announced in the evening that the book and culture departments of supermarkets and specialized food would be "temporarily closed from this evening".

Many stores, such as clothing and toys, are alarmed by a closure during the key period leading up to the holiday season.

The federation of toy merchants has announced the filing of a summary before the Council of State against the sale of toys in hypermarkets.

Poverty and debt are growing

Unsurprisingly, the reconfinement will weigh heavily on the French economy.

The government now expects a slightly more severe recession than expected this year, despite the strong rebound in the French economy in the third quarter.

The Secours populaire launched a "powerful appeal" for solidarity, the association warning that "The health crisis has resulted in an increase in poverty and precariousness".

Gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to contract by 11%, said Bruno Le Maire, who so far predicted a recession, already significant, of 10%.

Public debt will come close to 120% (119.8%) of GDP in 2020, against 117.5% forecast recently, the minister told Le

Record cases in the United States, nearly 1.2 million deaths worldwide

The United States is facing an acceleration of the coronavirus epidemic a few days before the presidential election with a record number of new infections on Friday.

More than 94,000 cases have been identified in the last 24 hours in the United States alone, the highest daily number since the start of the pandemic, according to a count from Johns Hopkins University.

European countries are thus the third most affected region behind Latin America and the Caribbean (11.2 million cases) and Asia (10.5).

Globally, more than 45 million human beings have been affected, of which nearly 1.2 million have lost their lives.

Latin America and the Caribbean crossed the threshold of 400,000 deaths from the coronavirus on Friday, according to a count established by AFP.

The Latin American and Caribbean region had 400,524 dead on Friday morning, Brazil in the lead with 159,477 deaths since the start of the epidemic.

Europe is in second place with 275,000 deaths.
