Health: A Spanish study estimates that 80% of patients admitted with Covid-19 suffer from a lack of vitamin D
This week we learned that a
lack of vitamin D
may be a common factor among people with a more severe
coronavirus
, according to a study published in the
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism
of the Endocrine Society.
Vitamin D has several important functions in the body.
Among them, helping the body absorb the calcium present in food.
But it is also important in the transmission of messages from the nervous system and the immune system.
So if it is that important,
where can we get vitamin D?
The
best way to obtain
vitamin D is
by sunbathing for 15 minutes
a day since it is considered that
between 80 and 90%
of it is obtained through skin synthesis from UVB radiation.
And, although the percentage of vitamin D that reaches us through the diet is low, there are some
foods
more suitable than others.
These would be
blue fish, egg yolk, dairy or some types of mushrooms
.
Of course, the way these foods are cooked affects their vitamin D content. As Boticaria García points out, frying fish reduces its vitamin D content by approximately 50%, while cooking it does not affect it.
