The news in itself is not a surprise.

But this time it is official.

The Lyon Festival of Lights is indeed canceled.

The announcement was made this Wednesday noon by the mayor EELV of the city Grégory Doucet, invited on the plateau of France 3 Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

After several weeks of hesitation and a few hours from a possible general reconfinement, the decision was taken to give up the holding of this popular event, a true tradition in Lyon.

The spread of the coronavirus epidemic in the territory finally convinced the leaders to throw in the towel.

A logical decision given the cancellations of the Christmas market and the Vogue des Marrons de la Croix-Rousse.

The return of candles?

The Festival of Lights was to be held from December 5 to 8 in a lighter version.

The city planned to do away with the shows in the city center but to concentrate the activities in the Tête d'Or and Gerland parks.

More than ever, the Lyonnais will be invited to put tealights (small candles) on their windows on December 8 to perpetuate the tradition dating from 1852.
