The inhabitants of Saint-Paul-de-Vence may have to vote again to elect their mayor.

The justice canceled this Wednesday the last municipal election in this commune of the Alpes-Maritimes, according to a judgment of the administrative court of Nice.

The candidate nominated by 780 votes against 772 on June 28, Jean-Pierre Camilla, can appeal.

Seized by the candidate Corinne Paolini, therefore beaten by eight votes, the court considered that "ten irregularly cast votes must be deducted from the list that came first", a number sufficient to "alter the sincerity" of the ballot.

"It's respect for democracy"

The candidate without a label came second in the first round.

For the second, she had merged her list with two others but had been narrowly beaten by that of Jean-Pierre Camilla, first deputy of the outgoing mayor, also without a label.

"It is respect for democracy, justice has passed," reacted Corinne Paolini, who now hopes for quick elections in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.

During the municipal election, the candidates campaigned in particular on the theme of tourism, which brings this village-museum of 3,500 inhabitants to life as much as it is debated.

Each year, 1.5 to 2 million tourists come to stroll in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, whose worldwide fame was shaped by Picasso, Miro, Calder or Chagall.

They notably come to visit its art galleries and the Maeght foundation.
