After passing through the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula, Tropical Storm Zeta again became a hurricane overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday over the Gulf of Mexico.
Currently category 1 on a scale of 5, with winds blowing up to 150 km / h, the hurricane is expected to hit the coasts of the US state of Louisiana in the afternoon on Wednesday, the National Center for Hurricanes (NHC), based in Miami.
It should strengthen further during the day and hit Louisiana in the New Orleans area in category 2, meteorologists warned.
A hurricane warning has been issued and extends from the town of Morgan City, Louisiana, to the Mississippi-Alabama border.
Coastal submersion alert
In addition to the winds and heavy rains expected, the NHC has also warned of the dangers posed by the rising sea waters: a coastal submersion alert is in place for a whole part of the coastline.
“It seems pretty clear now that Zeta will hit New Orleans directly.
Finish getting ready this morning, ”city mayor LaToya Cantrell tweeted Wednesday morning.
"Make sure you have water, food and medicine for everyone in your household."
State of emergency for Louisiana
President Donald Trump approved the declaration of a state of emergency for Louisiana on Tuesday evening, allowing federal resources to be released, the White House announced.
The hurricane will be the fifth named storm to hit the Louisiana coast this year (storms are only named after a certain intensity).
Hurricanes Laura and Delta hit the state's coastline in roughly the same spot recently.
Hurricane Zeta, which had formed over the Caribbean Sea, made landfall Monday night in the vicinity of Ciudad Chemuyil, in the state of Quintano Roo in Mexico.
Its passage did not make any victims there, according to its governor.
Warming oceans = more powerful hurricanes
The hurricane season, which is not yet over, is particularly intense this year.
Due to the exhaustion of the list of expected Latin names, meteorologists began to identify them with the Greek alphabet.
As the surface of the oceans warms, hurricanes become more powerful, according to scientists, who predict an increase in the proportion of category 4 and 5 cyclones, the most destructive.
