The MGM studio would have tried to sell the new James Bond to streaming platforms, even before its theatrical release, postponed twice.

The possibility of this exit far from the cinemas is not yet confirmed.

It's a title that seems more and more prescient.

Die Can Wait

, the new film in the James Bond franchise, has been offered by MGM studios to streaming platforms, according to reports from the US news agency Bloomberg.

This possible online release would replace the theatrical release, already postponed from last April to November 2020, then from the end of the year to April 2021.

No sale recorded for the moment

Despite these two postponements of the theatrical release of the film, due obviously to the health crisis, the situation does not seem to improve.

The MGM studios, at the origin of the new James Bond who is to be the last played by Daniel Craig, are starting to worry about their finances.

Because the film was expensive: no less than $ 250 million in production.

According to Bloomber, MGM therefore openly explored the idea of selling the film to a streaming service (be it Netflix, Apple TV + or Amazon) or offering it for paid viewing, as

Mulan

was recently.

 at Disney +.

No agreement has been found with these different platforms.

Because MGM would have, according to Bloomberg, asked at least 600 million dollars to recover its costs.

However, none of his interlocutors considered paying more than half of this amount.

This exorbitant sum of 600 million would correspond to the addition of the 250 million which were used to produce the film and the money spent to ensure the promotion of the film of which Billie Eilish signs its soundtrack.

The studios should also compensate their partners if they abandon the theatrical release.

A pending question

This release "out of theaters" would penalize Universal, which holds the distribution rights for the film, and which has also paid tens of millions of dollars to promote it.

Not to mention the sponsors, who will not necessarily be thrilled at the idea that the film they have helped to put forward jumps the cinema box to land directly on the small screen.

Faced with information published by Bloomberg, MGM declined to comment on the possibility of past discussions with streaming platforms.

However, the studios have indicated that the movie

Dying Can Wait

is not for sale.

A position which could of course evolve, in the event that the pandemic is still not under control by April 2021.
