The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Sunday that it recorded a new world record for coronavirus contamination for the third day in a row on Saturday.

According to WHO global statistics, 465,319 cases were confirmed on Saturday, compared to 449,720 on Friday and 437,247 on Thursday.

This figure alone does not however give an exact idea of the state of the pandemic since it can be influenced by the multiplication of tests.

The northern hemisphere is at a "critical moment" in the Covid-19 pandemic, WHO boss Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned on Friday, saying that too many countries are recording an exponential increase in cases.

"We are at a critical moment in the pandemic, especially in the northern hemisphere," he said.

"An exponential increase in cases"

"Too many countries are experiencing an exponential increase in Covid-19 cases and this is now leading to hospitals and intensive care units being close or having exceeded their capacity limits and we are only in October" , he added.

He estimated that "the next few months will be very difficult" while "some countries are on a dangerous path".
