  • In the Loire and the Rhône, where the epidemic is more marked, the intensive care services are starting to be overloaded.

  • The ARS has asked hospitals throughout the greater region to deprogram non-emergency activities.

  • Transfers of patients to New Aquitaine are organized by planes, starting this Friday.

Since the beginning of October, all the indicators for monitoring the coronavirus have been flying in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, one of the four regions where hospital services are starting to be overloaded.

As in Paca, in Hauts-de-France and Ile de France, the bar of 50% of resuscitation beds occupied by Covid + patients has been crossed, Prime Minister Jean Castex said Thursday evening.

Faced with this worrying situation for hospitals, which, in addition to the Covid-19 epidemic, have to deal with other common or operative pathologies, the Regional Health Agency announced on Friday various measures to discharge services already on the verge of asphyxiation, mainly in the Rhône and the Loire.

"I have asked hospitals throughout the region to deprogram activities or interventions that can be without calling into question the patient's prognosis," said the director general of ARS Aura Jean-Yves Grall on Friday.

Emergencies, operations that cannot be postponed, pediatrics, consultations linked to chronic pathologies, transplants and oncology are not concerned, specifies the ARS.

In hospitals under pressure, the deprogramming of non-emergency activities makes it possible to mobilize nursing staff in the departments where they are most needed, in particular in intensive care.

First interregional transfers

Due to the high occupancy of resuscitation beds in the Rhône, Loire, and Isère to a lesser extent, transfers of patients to departments in the region less affected for the time being by the epidemic have been organized. .

“Between October 13 and 19, 16 patients were transferred to relieve the healthcare teams in the Rhône and the Loire,” adds the director.

In the coming hours, eight other Covid patients, currently treated in Lyon, Villeurbanne (medipolis) and Saint-Etienne, will be transferred by medical planes to hospitals in Bordeaux, Poitiers and Brive, specifies the ARS.

"The current resuscitation capacities of the New Aquitaine region allow it to provide this reception in complete safety", assure the health authorities.

All the departments concerned, except Cantal and Allier

These measures were imposed in the face of the "considerable increase" in epidemic indicators in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes observed since the beginning of October.

With the exception of Cantal and Allier, all the departments are facing a resurgence of the epidemic, which is much stronger in the metropolitan areas of Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Grenoble.

The incidence rates of the virus per 100,000 inhabitants are respectively more than 800 cases, 640 cases and 550 cases (against 251 at the national level).

In the Loire, 462 people are hospitalized to date, including 59 people in intensive care, and in the Rhône, 907 Covid + patients are taken care of, including 148 in intensive care.

The CHU de Lyon indicated on Tuesday that more than 94% of its sheave beds were occupied, by Covid + patients in 45% of cases.
