The teachers' unions were received this Thursday at the ministry to discuss the course of the day of tribute to Samuel Paty in schools at the start of the school year.

“We all insisted on the need to leave a trivialized time for the teams on the morning of November 2 to share the emotion and also ask questions about the way in which the institution supported colleagues, about the teaching of secularism.

We need to see how we will let the students express themselves as well, ”Frédérique Rolet, general secretary of Snes-FSU, the first secondary school union, explained to the press.

This would mean that students, from kindergarten to high school, could potentially not be welcomed as early as 8 a.m. on November 2.

“For the moment, we do not have a precise answer, we must act quickly to inform the families (…) We are told at this stage, on the side of the ministry, that a dialogue must be initiated with the local authorities ”Added Frédérique Rolet.

Proposals on a video or text that would come from the ministry

On the content of this day of tribute to Professor Samuel Paty, beheaded on October 16 in Conflans-Saint-Honorine in the Yvelines, the ministry presented the possibility of "a time for the reception of staff to reflect on harmonization in the establishments, then the time of the collective homage, framed nationally, with a minute of silence and a reading ”, detailed Jean-Rémi Girard, president of Snalc (secondary).

"On these two points there is consensus", he added, "but where it discusses, it is on the teaching time, on what one does with the pupils".

On this last point, the trade unions all point to a “too precise” framework.

“We had proposals for a video or a text that would come from the ministry.

This seems complicated to us, because we need the time to be able to prepare and this could perhaps be done over a longer period than the day of November 2, ”added Jean-Rémi Girard.

Adapt the message to the little ones

For Stéphane Crochet, secretary general of SE-Unsa, it is also "very important to take into account the difference between ages: from kindergarten to Terminale, there is a strong nuance of age.

It has been heard, but it is absolutely necessary to adapt this tribute to the age of the children, ”he said, insisting on“ the adaptation of the message, especially in kindergarten ”.

Wednesday, Jean-Michel Blanquer asked "all elected representatives of the Republic, municipal councilors, mayors, senators, to be present with teachers on the day of this return".

“We had a debate on the presence of the elected guests and it seems to us that if this is a request from certain teams why not.

But above all, we must not impose it, because we have elected representatives who can speak words that are contrary to the ideas of the school and of tolerance of the Republic, ”warned Frédérique Rolet.

This working meeting on the organization of the day of November 2 must be followed by a second meeting, next week.
