Performing arts and cinema actors will respectively receive 85 million and 30 million euros in additional aid to get through the health crisis linked to the Covid-19 epidemic, Minister of Culture Roselyne Bachelot announced Thursday.

This amount is in addition to the 432 million euros allocated, as part of the two billion euros recovery plan for the entire cultural sector announced at the end of August, to live performances, private and public.

The need for Culture

“Everyone needs, we need culture, and perhaps even more during this crisis which has affected our ability to come together,” said Roselyne Bachelot during a press conference with Prime Minister Jean Castex, on the evolution of the epidemic in France.

“With regard to live performance, it is 85 million euros of aid that will be released,” said the Minister.

Amounts intended for theater, dance, opera, musicals, music… The rest of the amount, ie 30 million euros, will go to the cinema sector.

Roselyne Bachelot also announced that the executive would propose to Parliament "to extend the exemption from the tax on shows in the first half of 2021 to reduce the costs of companies in the sector".

The amount of this aid, less than two months after the announcement of the stimulus plan, suggests that the government expects a lasting crisis in the world of culture.

No exemption from the curfew

Roselyne Bachelot did not repeat her proposal, rejected by the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire in particular, of an exemption from the curfew offered to holders of a theater ticket or a cinema ticket.

However, it clarified the impact of this measure on the entertainment world.

“In the territories concerned, the curfew has serious consequences on the maintenance of activity.

The structures adapt the schedules, but obviously they do not necessarily meet their audience.

Attendance, and therefore their resources, will decrease.

Our objective is both to safeguard the programs and the rooms by allowing play even at extremely low levels.

"

As for the cinemas, “the two evening screenings, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., can no longer hold.

However, these two sessions represent half of the turnover of the rooms, detailed Roselyne Bachelot.

Our goal is to ensure that the cinemas do not close, that the public can continue to see films.

For this, film releases must be maintained throughout the country.

And yet, every day, new announcements of postponed film releases are announced.
