A number of patients with a moderate form of coronavirus keep symptoms for several weeks or even months.

A scenario that is not specific to Covid-19.

More and more people are talking about this lingering fatigue or these persistent headaches.

While a large portion of people with a mild form of the coronavirus recover within a short time, some retain symptoms for long weeks or even months.

And unfortunately, doctors do not have a cure for these long forms.

Coronavirus: follow the evolution of the situation Thursday, October 22

What kinds of symptoms?

These are people who have had a moderate form, who do not go to the hospital and who, a few days, a few weeks or even several months after the infection, will keep symptoms, such as fatigue, headaches, trouble concentrating, or shortness of breath at the slightest effort.

And this, while all the examinations that the patient will perform are normal: normal chest X-ray, blood test not showing any inflammation, etc.

Is it specific to Covid-19?

No, it's common to all coronaviruses.

SARS gave the same thing, as did MERS-CoV, which also causes prolonged fatigue for several months.

There are other infections such as mononucleosis, which will lead to post-infectious syndrome.

Is there a treatment?

No.

For the moment, there is no specific treatment against these long forms of the coronavirus.

Once we have made sure that the patient does not have a problem with the lung, the kidney, that the heart is fine, the doctors do not know what to suggest.

Anyway, even in case of mild and short form, even if, for example, you have not coughed a lot, it is recommended to go to your doctor, between two weeks and one month after the infection, to check that there is no inflammation on auscultation.

If in doubt, a CT scan can be done to check that there is no lesion, fibrosis, these pulmonary sequelae that can be treated and stabilized to avoid leading to respiratory failure.
