Paris, mille vies

by Laurent Gaudé, published on October 7, 2020 by Actes Sud.

Her favorite quote:

“I have nothing else to do but wander its streets like a watchful guard.

Paris wants his mouth.

She is hungry for words.

Too many lives are piling up in her.

You have to say them.

"

Why this book?

  • Because Laurent Gaudé's wandering in Paris at night

has transported me, through places, through time, through centuries, as in a moment of uncertainty and in a surrealist atmosphere.

  • Because I had the feeling of having a funny dream

while I read this wonderful tale, carried away by a dazzling and bewitching style over barely a hundred pages.

I was won over by the author's air and precious pen which touched me deeply.

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.

The narrator wanders the time of a night in the streets of Paris empty of any human being.

It tells the memories of a thousand lives lived here and there.

Illustrious figures or illustrious unknowns over the past five centuries.

Characters.

What a pleasure to meet Verlaine, Baudelaire, Artaud, Victor Hugo, Rimbaud or François Villon and to see these personalities collide during incongruous and improbable encounters.

Places.

Paris, Montparnasse, the Latin Quarter, Montmartre, the Grands Boulevards.

The time.

Several eras overlap randomly throughout the text.

A real journey through time and history.

The author.

Laurent Gaudé received the Prix Goncourt des lycéens in 2002 and the Prix des libraires in 2003 for

The Death of King Tsongor,

then the Goncourt and the Prix Jean Giono in 2004 for

Le Soleil des Scorta

.

This book was read with the desire

to read and reread many sentences to engrave in me the essence of beauty.
