  • At HCLs, more than 94% of intensive care beds are occupied.

  • In addition to Covid + patients, which are on the rise in hospitals, there are patients with other pathologies, which worries the CHU on the eve of the usual winter epidemics.

  • To unclog certain services, patient transfers have already taken place to other departments in the region less affected by the epidemic wave.

The scenario so dreaded a few weeks ago in Lyon, as in other metropolises strongly affected by the coronavirus epidemic, seems to become reality in the second CHU of France.

As of October 19, "the overall occupancy rate of intensive care units is 94.1%", the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL) indicated on Tuesday in a weekly Covid-19 monitoring point.

Of the 169 beds open in intensive care (thirty more than normal), nearly 46% are occupied by Covid + patients against 38% a week ago.

The second epidemic wave therefore seems to be confirmed in the metropolis of Lyon, where other pathologies also greatly occupy staff.

A worrying situation with the approach of winter epidemics leading each year to a stronger activity in hospitals, in intensive care in particular.

First transfers of patients to other departments

Among the other indicators closely monitored by the management of the HCL, hospitalizations of patients infected with the coronavirus have also increased during the last week, with 345 people received on October 19 in hospital, in sheaves and in follow-up care and rehabilitation (235 on October 12).

At the Samu, calls related to Covid have increased by almost 20% over the past week and in emergencies, the proportion of Covid + patients among those received is also increasing, but less markedly.

Faced with this situation, the HCLs, which have already deprogrammed certain non-urgent interventions, like other establishments in the Rhône, have recently started to transfer patients to other less affected departments.

In recent days, patients from the Edouard-Herriot hospital have been transported to the hospital of Chambéry in Savoie, according to the director of the Lyon hospital interviewed Monday by France 3.

Doctors appeal to the public

To limit the spread of the virus and prevent asphyxiation of hospitals, doctors from Auvergne Rhône-Alpes on Monday launched an appeal "for national unity" and posted a petition online to ask for the support of the population.

They particularly insisted on the importance of barrier gestures and more restrictive protection measures, such as the curfew, in force in the metropolis of Lyon, but also in Grenoble and Saint-Etienne, since last Saturday.

"I know that the measures are difficult for many of our fellow citizens but if we do not all fight together, it will be worse", warns the president of the medical commission of establishment of the HCL, at the origin of this "call to the fellow citizens ".
