  • If he was not on file for radicalization, those close to Abdullakh Anzorov confided in police custody that they had seen his behavior change for several months.

  • In the eyes of a source close to the investigation, his gesture was premeditated.

  • Investigators are trying to find out what link the terrorist may have had with the parent of the student at the origin of the controversy.

It all started with a banal incident in progress, as the national education system manages by the hundreds throughout the year.

Monday, October 5, Samuel Paty discusses with his 4th year students from the Bois d'Aulne college, in Conflans-Saint-Honorine (Yvelines), the issue of freedom of expression as part of a moral education course and civic.

A course that he has been teaching for several years, according to the testimony of former students, and during which he presents caricatures of Muhammad published in

Charlie Hebdo

.

So as not to shock the Muslim students, he suggests that they close their eyes, look away or go out for a few moments with the companion of a disabled student.

How did this course, classic in its content, take on such a tragic dimension?

Why, eleven days later, Abdoullakh Anzorov, an 18-year-old Chechen, who arrived in France at the age of 6, beheaded this professor?

And this, even though the assailant, who resided in Evreux, has never been educated in this establishment and did not know Samuel Paty.

Unlike many attacks - like the one committed three weeks earlier in front of the former Charlie Hebdo premises - the terrorist did not strike at random.

College students paid to appoint Samuel Paty

Abdoullakh Anzorov was looking for Samuel Paty, whom he had heard about, according to the first elements of the investigation, on social networks but whose face he did not know.

To recognize it, investigators from the anti-terrorism sub-directorate (Sdat) and internal intelligence (DGSI) established that the terrorist paid college students to appoint this professor, learned

from a source close to the investigation , confirming information from

Le Monde

.

One of the teenagers is currently in custody - like ten other people - although there is no indication, at this stage, that he was aware of Anzorov's disastrous project.

The controversy surrounding the course taught by this teacher began on social networks on October 7, after Brahim C., the father of a student, posted several messages and a first video on Facebook in which he summed up the members of his community to exclude this professor, a "thug", who boasts "of having made the march for Charlie", he insists.

If he does not call for violence, he gives his name, that of the school and even his phone number.

Two other videos will follow, including one made with Abdelhakim Sefrioui, an activist S file for his radicalization.

The two men are received by the principal of the establishment but refuse to meet Samuel Paty, promising to organize a demonstration in front of the establishment to obtain his dismissal.

However, the teacher apologized to the students, admitting to having been awkward.

An intelligence note

On October 12, five days before the attack, the territorial intelligence services split a note on the controversy, revealed by

Liberation

and that

20 Minutes

was able to consult, but affirm that the situation is being appeased thanks to to the dialogue initiated by the establishment.

However, the videos continue to circulate, and Samuel Paty is the subject of threats, in particular by telephone.

Brahim C - whose intelligence note says the girl was not in class that day - files a complaint against the teacher, to which the teacher responds with a defamation complaint.

What role did Brahim C. and Abdelhakim Sefrioui play in the passage to the act?

Do they only bear a moral responsibility?

Or have they been more active than they claim?

According to our information, the links between these two men and the killer are "still being deepened".

In police custody, both deny any involvement, specifies a judicial source.

The controversy, a pretext for the attack

According to a source close to the investigation, if the attack, and in particular its modus operandi, was undoubtedly "premeditated", the controversy surrounding this professor may have given Abdoullakh Anzorov a pretext to "move on to it. act ”.

At the end of August, the assailant had published on his Twitter account - the same on which he posted the photo of his crime - the video montage of a slaughter, revealed Saturday

Mediapart

.

According to our information, if the terrorist was not listed, the investigations quickly showed that the assailant had been radicalized for at least a few months, "even a year".

In police custody, his relatives said they had noted changes in his behavior recently, "a more rigorous practice" of Islam, said a judicial source.

Two of his friends presented themselves to the police the day after the attack.

One of them, according to our information, explained to have deposited the terrorist Friday at the beginning of the afternoon near Conflans-Saint-Honorine.

The second told investigators that he took Anzorov to the armory, where he bought two knives and an Airsoft-type pistol.
