Guest of "Sans Rendez-vous" this Monday, Professor Stéphane Droupy, head of the urology and andrology department of the Nîmes CHU, draws up an alarming report on the progression of male infertility.

Over the past 30 years, the quantity of sperm and their quality has been halved.

INTERVIEW

Less sperm and lower quality.

In the era of endocrine disruptors, this is an alarming report that Professor Stéphane Droupy, head of the urology and andrology department of the University Hospital of Nîmes, and co-author of

Demain, tous infertiles,

makes this Monday in Sans Rendez-vous

.

"For 30 years, we have now seen a drop in the quantity of spermatozoa and their quality by 50%, this is considerable."

A phenomenon which automatically leads to an increase in the difficulties of conceiving a child, in which "the man is involved about half of the time".

Many consequences

For Stéphane Droupy, the undesirable effects of endocrine disruptors can occur even before birth: testicles descended into the bursa, penis "not completely finished", "urethra that does not go to the end", micro-penis ...

Shampoos, creams, sun protection, plastic food containers, diet: the urologist deplores the presence of endocrine disruptors everywhere.

"The 20th century has seen an explosion of chemicals to improve our daily lives, and even save lives," recalls Stéphane Droupy.

But today, "we suffer, a bit like the climate, the undesirable effects of these substances which have given us a lot".

If each disruptor has a minimal effect, according to Stéphane Droupy, it is the accumulation of several products, the "cocktail effect", which will in the long term have consequences on fertility.

So no need to panic if your shower gel contains a disruptor.

"Eating organic is better for the sperm"

According to the urologist, before embarking on a more medicalized journey, several daily changes help promote fertility, starting with diet.

"Organic products contain four times less significant residues than conventional foods," he explains.

"Eating organic is better for the sperm".

The fact remains that certain foods must also be favored.

"To put it simply, it's the Mediterranean diet, with vegetables, fish rich in omega 3, olive oil, but also dark chocolate, red fruits, nuts, lean meats (poultry) . "

A diet that must be part of the long term, because the quality of the sperm can take months to return.

"A minimum of physical activity can improve the fertility potential", adds the specialist.

"Cannabis is the enemy of sperm"

Among the factors that can be at the origin of male infertility, Stéphane Droupy insists on one point: cannabis.

Its consumption is harmful on the one hand because "of a certain number of junk food found inside, but also because of THC", the active molecule of this plant.

"THC has its own receptors in the brain, but also in the testes."
