Because it is located in the hinterland of the Taklimakan Desert, Qiemo County is called "Desert Island". The desert area accounts for nearly 40% of the county's area.

In order to fight the sandstorm and seek benefits from the desert, the local government has adopted various business methods such as investment promotion, joint-stock management, unit claim, and development of rural collective economy, planting wind-proof and sand-fixing economic forests and inoculating large clouds to increase income.

Up to now, Qiemo County has inoculated a total of 80,000 mu of Dayun under the Haloxylon ammodendron forest. In the October 2020 harvest season, it is planned to excavate 6,000 mu of Dayun, with an estimated output of 470 tons and a total output value of 6.11 million yuan.

The county plans to achieve full coverage of 115,000 acres of Haloxylon ammodendron forest land by 2030, and build a comprehensive sand industry demonstration base integrating sand planting and medicinal material planting, and desert tourism.
