The departure of "grace" ... an icon of Tunisian art

Nehme died at the age of 86

Yesterday, death missed the Tunisian singer Nehme at the age of 86, after having influenced the art scene with hundreds of songs, and for decades she was an ambassador of Tunisian art.

In a statement, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs called out "the deceased Tunisian singer, the able singer Nehme, who passed away after a struggle with illness."

A number of Tunisian artists also mourned her, on social media, including the actress Hend Sabry, who wrote on Twitter: “Today, one of the icons of Tunisian and Arab art has passed away. The one who gave her the title of the first artist of Tunisia is gone.

"The great singer and artist, Nehme, left after 360 songs.

Tunisian singing today is an orphan ».

The late artist was born in the village of Azemmour from the delegation of Kelibia in the state of Nabeul in 1934 in the name of Halima al-Sheikh, but musician Saleh al-Mahdi chose her artistic name Nehme.

She started singing at the age of 11 with the song "Salha" and "Makhoul Nezara", then she sang for the first time in front of the audience at a charity party for the benefit of the Blind Association, which qualified her to become one of the singers of the Rashidieh group.

She joined the National Radio as a certified singer in 1958 when the radio group was then including big names like Saliha and Alia.

She traveled with the radio troupe to many countries, and participated in major events, such as the Miss Arab Election Festival in Beirut in 1966 and the Cairo Millennium Festival in 1969, after which she was named Tunisia's first artist.

Top musicians in Tunisia composed for her, as Sayed Mekkawi from Egypt composed her, Hassan Oreibi from Libya, and others.

She returned to her village, Azemmour, after she retired from art.

Great composers composed for her, and she won many titles.
