The latest hopeful finding in

the fight against the coronavirus pandemic

comes from a 14-year-old teenager:

Anika Chebrolu.

This student from Independence High School in Frisco, Texas, has developed

a possible treatment against Covid-19,

which has led her to win a contest, the 3M Young Scientist Challenge, awarded with $ 25,000, just over 21,000 euros.

Chebrolu

has developed a molecule

that binds to a protein in the SARS-CoV-2 virus and stops this virus from working.

Using a computer program, he discovered how the molecule could bind to the virus, based on a database of more than 682 million compounds.

Although his research was initially directed at the common flu virus, the spread of the pandemic caused him to change his plans.

"I have always been passionate about science experiments since my childhood and wanted to find effective cures for influenza illness after a severe episode of infection last year. I would like to learn more from 3M scientists to

continue my drug development.

and, with their help, perform in vitro and in vivo tests, "enthused Chebrolu, who aspires to become a medical researcher and teacher, in a statement to the 3M Young Scientist Lab.

In addition to the explosion of Covid-19 cases around the world and the testimonies of people who have suffered the disease or have lost a family member or friend for this reason, his grandfather has been another of the reasons that have prompted this young promise of science to seek a cure for the disease caused by this new coronavirus.

"My grandfather, when I was younger, always encouraged me to follow the path of science. In fact, he was a chemistry teacher, and he always told me to learn the periodic table of elements and other things about science and eventually just I loved it, "he commented to ABC a few days ago.

For now, we will have to wait to see how far the discovery of this young scientific promise takes.
