  • A month after the start of the school year, the president of the university describes a problematic situation in terms of student accommodation.

  • He asks all the inhabitants who have a room to rent to please come forward.

This is an unprecedented situation in Angers.

While in all the university cities, the housing crisis is felt year after year, the situation has become very worrying in the prefecture of Maine-et-Loire.

"A month after the start of the school year, we still have around 150 students without a housing solution," said University President Christian Roblédo.

As the head of the establishment, as the father of a family, we cannot accept that students are left to fend for themselves.

"

According to the university, several cases of young people sleeping on the streets or in their cars have been reported.

Others, who cannot find accommodation in the city of King René, are sometimes lodged several hundred kilometers from the university.

"We are following several, some of whom have found accommodation in Nantes, Le Mans or even Paris and have to make the trip every day," reports Pasa Akin, president of Unef Angers and elected to the board of directors.

This generates additional costs for students already affected by precariousness, and difficulties in following the courses.

A "solemn appeal" from the president of the university

At the end of last week, the president of the university made outright "a solemn appeal".

In a video message, he asks all students, staff or residents of the agglomeration who have a free room to rent to please come forward by registering on an online platform.

A device in addition to the hotel rooms hastily rented at the start of the school year, which are not enough to alleviate the situation of some young people.

“This is an unusual but welcome speech, even if the issue of student housing goes back at least three years, recognizes Pasa Akin.

We especially point the finger at the municipality and the CROUS, which offers a largely insufficient number of beds.

According to the latest figures, the university housing estates offer around 2,340 beds in Angers, where rents have exploded in recent years in the private rental stock.

With more than 40,000 students, a figure on the rise, Angers nevertheless regularly returns in the rankings of the best cities to study.
