Director Spike Lee -
Zuma / Starface
When Chadwick Boseman arrived on the set of
Da 5 Bloods
, Spike Lee's latest film, the director could never have imagined he was battling cancer, which would kill him a few months later.
In an interview for
Variety
, the New York filmmaker returned to his relationship with the actor.
“He didn't seem to be doing well, but I never thought he had cancer.
It was an exhausting shoot.
We couldn't go to Vietnam until the end of the shoot, in Ho Chi Minh City.
All the rest of the shooting, in the jungle, we did it in Thailand, it was 40 degrees every day.
There was one of the worst pollution in the world.
But I understand why Chadwick didn't tell me, he didn't want me to be too nice to him.
If I had known, I would never have asked him to do everything he did.
I respect him for that, ”said the filmmaker.
Bathed in the light of God
In the interview, Spike Lee also remembers a particular scene in his film, where the
Black Panther
star
is surrounded by a strange light.
“There's a scene where he's like a ghost.
This is the scene where he returns with Delroy at the end.
I felt it when I turned it (…) The light was the light of God.
We hadn't put in a light.
You see that divine light, and there's only Chadwick standing there posing.
God was there that night, I don't care what you think, it was the light of God, because there was no light put on that scene.
It's natural light and it was God who sent it to Chadwick (…) It was very hard for me to watch the movie since it came to the other side.
It was a new experience, ”added the director.
Chadwick Boseman died on August 28 at age 43 after a four-year battle with colon cancer.
