The macabre discovery took place this Thursday morning.

The lifeless body of a man was discovered in the bed of the Var river, near Carros (Alpes-Maritimes).

This is one of the two firefighters missing since Friday evening in La Bollène-Vésubie.

The intervention vehicle of the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) with the two firefighters on board had been swept away by the swollen river when the roadway gave way under its wheels.

Six dead, six missing

After this discovery, the provisional toll of the disaster that hits the Alpes-Maritimes now stands at six deaths.

Six other people are still missing and 13 remain “presumed missing”.

Since the start of the storm Alex, the firefighters of the Alpes-Maritimes have carried out more than 600 interventions and saved or brought to safety 1,162 people, including 700 by helicopters.

This Thursday morning, the day after the visit of the President of the Republic, the state of "natural disaster" was recognized for 55 municipalities of the Côte d'Azur.
