Thailand: Two years in prison for a tourist for criticizing a hotel
Ranking: Sleeping in the best hotel in the world costs 40 euros per night
The first foreign tourists arriving in Thailand after more than six months of prohibition can choose to serve the
mandatory quarantine in a luxury hotel
, with a private pool, a bathtub with a view and a
king-size
bed
.
"It will be comfortable, although I am afraid of worrying about the confinement," says Jean-François, a retired Frenchman who lives in Stockholm and hopes to come to spend the winter in Thailand.
"I also wonder if Thailand is not exaggerating a bit," he added.
The authorities force foreign tourists, who should arrive in droppers in the coming weeks, to spend
14 days of isolation in special hotels such
as The Senses Resort, in Phuket, before being able to extend their stay in the rest of the country.
This luxurious hotel overlooking the famous
Patong Bay
has had to organize itself to be one of the few on the island authorized to receive these atypical visitors, who will have to undergo several
coronavirus tests
and temperature measurements.
The hotel has also mobilized
doctors and security guards
who monitor the rooms
24 hours a day
.
For their part, the employees were trained in hospitals and have received personal protective equipment (PPE) to deliver
meals in
front
of the room doors.
an island FOR 300 TOURISTS
Sixteen bungalows, with an area of between 110 m2 and 220 m2, were redesigned so that there are only wooden or plastic surfaces, which are easier to
disinfect
.
Surveillance cameras
were also installed
at the entrance to each of them.
Street of Phuket Town, where this pilot experience will be tested.
"Given the expense, we are not going to get much benefit from this special clientele," says Suppachoke Laongphet, owner of the hotel, one of the nine approved in Phuket so far. "But" we have to find some sources of income to support our team and the
local economy
. "
Before the coronavirus pandemic, tourism generated 93% of the income of Phuket, the pearl of
the Andaman Sea.
But today 95% of hotels and more than 70% of stores are closed, according to local authorities.
Hence the need to try to reopen the island, albeit very timidly: it is estimated that some
300 tourists from China and Scandinavia
should arrive in the coming weeks, perhaps more if the health situation remains under control.
SAFE DESTINATION
If the system is successful, other Thai provinces will follow suit.
Spending
14 days confined
to the Senses Resort costs $ 5,300 (
4,400 euros
) for one person, including meals, and almost $ 18,700 (15,800 euros) for four.
Everything is ready to receive the first tourists.
The complex obtained approval on September 29 and some
twenty Indian and European tourists
have already reserved to spend the 14 isolated days required by the authorities to spend there.
Kongsak Khoopongsakorn, president of the Thailand Hotel Association, admits that only a
small number of visitors
will choose this way of going through quarantine, "those who can afford it and wish to stay several months in our country, which is
very safe
in terms of fighting coronavirus "(according to official data, Thailand recorded fewer than 3,600 coronavirus-related cases and 59 deaths).
"This is not what will allow for a lasting recovery in Thailand's economy," which depends on tourism, with a record number of almost 40 million visitors last year, "but it allows us to wait," he adds.
