A large-scale operation.

Since the beginning of the week, the judicial police have arrested, all over France, 61 people suspected of exchanging child pornography videos.

Men, mainly, as well as a couple who looked at the pictures together.

Investigators from the OCRVP (Central Office for the Suppression of Violence against Persons) targeted, using American software, the suspects who downloaded the most.

A total of 220 officials were mobilized, including around sixty cybercrime specialists.

Thanks to the images recovered during the searches, several men were also implicated in cases of rape of minors.

“All social profiles are affected.

This goes from the unemployed to the executive through employees, ”remarks Commissioner Eric Bérot, head of the OCRVP, who answered questions from

.

In what context was this operation launched?

For several weeks, we initiated, at the OCRVP, procedures using American software that allows us to identify downloads of child pornography files on the P2P (peer-to-peer) network.

We therefore decided to launch a global operation with all the judicial police services of France.

For that, we identified a little more than 60 targets [suspects].

In total, 61 people were arrested between Monday and Thursday, which required the mobilization of 220 officials, including sixty specialists in cybercrime.

A dozen people have already been referred [presented to the prosecution], another was sentenced by the judicial court of Valenciennes to 10 months in prison.

How were these men targeted?

We targeted people who had large download volumes, who were known for similar facts, or who have a profession that can cause concern.

We had in the lot a retired teacher, a sports educator ... We could imagine that they had been able to take action.

This was also the case since four individuals were accused, in addition to downloading, of rape against minors, including three in the family.

Do you observe a particular profile?

No, the age of those arrested ranges from 28 to 75 years old.

All social profiles are affected.

This goes from the unemployed to the executive through employees ... No profession is spared.

Regarding family situations, we meet single people, couples with or without children ...

Are you seeing an increase in this offense?

We have 100,000 connections per year in France, that's a lot.

There was an increase in the volume of downloads during containment.

It's complicated to be more precise.

We therefore wanted to put a spotlight on this phenomenon.

Is it complicated to investigate this type of case?

Technically, it takes some skill.

It is often psychologically hard because the police have to watch the violent rapes of infants, 7 year old children who cry and who are slapped.

These are extremely painful videos to watch.

So you need experienced investigators who are trained in this.
