The indictment comes after a jury decided that Netflix had violated the law by deliberately spreading "this nasty display of writing on an undressed, half-dressed or dressed child."

According to The Texas Tribune, Netflix may have to pay $ 20,000 in sentencing.

If the court considers that the company has made money from the crime, the amount can be twice as high.

Film with provocative images

The film Snyggingar has nothing to do with Texas, but is a French film about an eleven-year-old Amy who grows up in France as a second-generation Senegalese immigrant.

The family is conservative and religious, but Amy sees her chance to break free when she meets a bunch of girls who are aiming to win a dance competition.

The film contains some provocative images when the girls dance lightly dressed in a "sexy" way.

That is what has aroused criticism, especially in the United States, where, among others, Senator Ted Cruz from Texas and Congressman Brian Babin called it child pornography.

"Prosecutors: Probable Reasons Why It Is Criminal"

Babin's son, Lucas Babin, is a prosecutor in the Tyler county case and says in a statement that the prosecution is being brought because Netflix has spread the film in the area.

"After hearing about and then seeing the movie Beautiful, I knew there were probable cause for it to be criminal," Babin wrote in a statement.

"If such material is distributed on such a large scale, is not the need for prosecution greater than less?"

he writes further.

Netflix stands for the film

Netflix defends the film in a statement.

"Handsome is a social comment against the sexualization of children.

This indictment is unfounded and we are behind the film, "the company wrote in a statement.

Earlier, the film's director Maïmouna Doucouré commented:

- I just hope that these people see the film, because then they would understand that we are on the same side in the fight against the hypersexualization of children, she told the newspaper Time.

No date has been set for the trial.
