This is the story of two mountain enthusiasts, who one day decided to use their knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Pyrenees to lead a somewhat new project with their boys.

After several months of preparation, Antoine Vaillant and Nicolas Moreno installed eight cameras to capture images of bears.

“We have studied the topography, the annual report on the brown bear in the Pyrenees and the places of passage.

We put eight cameras in early September and collected them in early October.

And there, we were surprised, ”says Antoine Vaillant, who works in scientific cultural activities in Toulouse.

Antoine Vaillant and Nicolas Moreno were able to capture the presence of several bears using their cameras.

On several occasions, five of the cameras were able to capture the comings and goings of bears, very comfortable with the camera, to the point that we can hear their hoarse breath and see the pupil of their eyes on the videos.

Educational objective

“There is a lot of humanity, for us, that calls for reflection.

Our goal was educational for our boys, to reconnect them to nature in this hyperconnected world.

We also wanted to show that the bear is part of the Pyrenean identity, that it is a symbol of biodiversity and that cohabitation is possible ”, continues the defender of the plantigrade.

Videos that they sent to the "brown bear" network which brings together volunteers who carry out surveys in the field, in the same way as the agents of the Office of biodiversity.
