- The unexpected portrait of… Hugo Clément

"I think what is happening on the ground today is a new world war. There are fronts opening up all over the planet. On the one hand, some are trying to protect what can still be, to propose solutions. And on the other, there are industrial and political powers, groups that destroy the environment and animals. "

"You have to talk to everyone"

Hugo Clément nevertheless admits it himself: the problem is not reduced to the confrontation between two camps.

In Costa Rica, he followed fishermen in search of hammerhead sharks, a species that is nevertheless protected and prohibited from fishing.

"Every time we investigate an environmental scandal, we go to the people behind the scandal", explains the journalist.

Here, Costa Rican fishermen are in open conflict with environmental activists who prevent them from working to feed their families.

"We have to talk with everyone, including those who cause the damage. Ecological warfare is also a war against ourselves: we have to fight against our own way of life, against what gives us the comfort in which we lives."

According to an environmental activist from the NGO Sea Shepherd, between 200 and 300 environmental defenders are killed each year, as well as 80 journalists.

Hugo Clément admits to sometimes taking risks but is especially worried about the activists permanently present on the ground: "Those who take the real risks are those who stay on the ground, who live on the ground, and who are all year round. in contact with dangerous people. "
