The Nobel Assembly of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm has awarded the
Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology
to researchers Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice.
The award is due to his
discovery of the hepatitis C virus
.
Last year, the Nobel Assembly of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine to researchers William G. Kaelin (USA), Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe (UK) and Gregg L. Semenza (USA) for their research on how cells adapt to the availability of oxygen.
In 2018, James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo were honored for their research on cancer immunotherapy.
In 2017, the award went to Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young in recognition of their discoveries about the molecular mechanisms that regulate circadian rhythms.
After the Nobel Prize in Medicine, they will be followed by Physics on Tuesday and Chemistry on Wednesday.
Two of the most anticipated will be released at the end of the week: Literature on Thursday and peace on Friday, in Oslo.
