This is a major blow in the fight against drug trafficking which has just been struck in Guyana.

"More than 500 kilos of cocaine" were seized Thursday evening at the port of Degrad-des-Cannes in Rémire-Montjoly, 15 km from Cayenne, Renaud Gaudeul, public prosecutor of Fort de France announced on Saturday.

The exact weight given on Monday

"We will have the exact weight on Monday (...) we can estimate that the weight will display more than 500 kg," said the prosecutor, confirming information from the online daily

"Big blow of the Gendarmerie of Guyana and OFAST (the anti-narcotics office) on a case of drug trafficking, more than 1/2 ton of cocaine seized", welcomed the prefecture of Guyana on his Facebook page.

According to the prefecture, four suspects are in custody, three vehicles have been seized and 18 bags of cocaine found.

The investigation into this case had started within the jurisdiction of Cayenne, before being transmitted, "in view of the alleged extent of the traffic", to the specialized interregional jurisdiction of Fort de France (JIRS), said Renaud. Gaudeul.

"Judicial information was opened and an investigating magistrate was seized in September," he added.

Cocaine trafficking between Guyana and Paris represents between 15 and 20% of entries into French territory, according to a parliamentary report submitted in mid-September by Antoine Karam, LREM senator from Guyana.

The report recommended to "reinforce the repressive policy, by intensifying the controls and the seizures to decrease the profitability of the traffic and to discourage the traffickers".
