  • Epidemiological monitoring indicates a slight lull in the spread of the coronavirus in Ille-et-Vilaine.

  • Rennes and its metropolis remain in a heightened alert zone and health professionals urge vigilance.

  • The Rennes University Hospital specifies that he is not saturated but that he does not wish to be in order to continue his surgical and medical activity normally.

After weeks of progress, the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic seems to be experiencing a "slight lull" in Ille-et-Vilaine.

These words barely spoken, the director of the University Hospital of Rennes Véronique Anatole-Touzet hastened to call for vigilance regarding this small inflection.

“The virus circulates a lot in the department and we know a particular situation in Rennes.

It seems that there is a small lull but we are having great difficulty in assessing the evolution of the epidemic, ”warns the director.

"From one day to another, everything can change"

This Friday, 22 people suffering from the coronavirus were hospitalized in the Rennes hospital, seven being in intensive care.

Last week, that figure was 33 people, and no children were taken in.

"We are not saturated, we must reassure the population, the parents," warns the director, before yet another reminder to vigilance.

The president of the medical committee of the establishment does not bother to find other words to give the substance of his thought.

“The key word is vigilance.

Extreme vigilance itself, as we cannot establish forecasts.

From one day to the next, everything can change ”.

"Our fear is that the resumption of the epidemic imposes on us reprogramming"

Professor Gilles Brassier, like all management, has his eyes riveted on the daily epidemic figures with one main concern: maintaining the “normal” activity of the hospital.

"Our fear is that the resumption of the epidemic imposes on us reprogramming".

These famous “deprogramming” had been necessary in the spring and all non-urgent surgical and medical acts had been postponed to make room for Covid patients.

“After the spring, we saw patients returning with severe forms of infarction or acute appendicitis.

We want to avoid these lost chances.

We cannot afford to do the same ”.

At the height of the epidemic, the Rennes University Hospital had managed to maintain 50% of its surgical activity, when some French hospitals fell to 20 or 30%.

To avoid overcrowding its beds, the hospital is also counting on its better care for patients with Covid.

“We have made a lot of progress.

The most serious cases are taken care of more quickly, it is more efficient, ”explains Professor Pierre Tattevin, head of the infectious diseases department.

“We know which treatments work and which ones don't, and we've cleaned up.

We see shorter hospital stays ”.

Mortality halved

According to the professor, the mortality of Covid patients has been halved.

While autumn has just struck, the doctor took advantage of the presence of the press this Friday to launch an appeal to be vaccinated against the flu.

“Initially, the symptoms are the same.

We must limit the number of people affected by winter pathologies.

It will really help us.

And that will help the patients ”.
