The entertainment giant Disney has announced on Tuesday

28,000 layoffs

in its activities of amusement parks, cruises, events and products as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The "prolonged impact of Covid-19 on our businesses, including the reduction in capacity at sites linked to social distancing, and uncertainties about the duration of the pandemic," has accelerated the decision, the group explained in a statement .

Parks unit president Josh D'Amaro has called the move "heartbreaking."

The statement, signed by him, cites the efforts that the management has carried out during this time to avoid layoffs by cutting expenses, suspending projects and streamlining operations.

"However," D'Amaro explained,

"we simply cannot keep up

with all personnel while operating at such a limited capacity."

To the impact of the coronavirus must be added, in addition, the uncertainty when it comes to returning to normality, "even greater due to California's refusal to lift the restrictions that would allow Disneyland to reopen," near Los Angeles, the company has pointed out.

In other parks, such as Florida, in Orlando, it has been possible to reopen but with limited capacity.

The leisure parks were closed but the company expected "a quick return to normalcy."

This was highlighted by Josh D'Amaro, who has assured that "seven months later, we must verify that it was not possible."

Between April and June,

the turnover of these activities fell by 85%

over the same period last year, to 983 million dollars.

"For several months, our human resources team has worked tirelessly to avoid being overstaffed," added D'Amaro.

The statement said that "staff members have always been the key to our success, they have played a valuable and important role in the development of our growth worldwide and we look forward to offering them an opportunity as soon as we can to return the company".

On the uncertainty of whether or not to reopen parks due to the coronavirus, Mark Ghaly, California's health secretary, has said that the state had adopted a scientific approach to reopening that aimed to "minimize the economic and health risks that would be caused. by repeatedly opening and closing ".
