  • A collective of cafe, bar and restaurant owners was created in Rennes to try to make themselves heard.

  • The professionals of the sector hope to be received by the mayor and the prefect to discuss the restrictive measures which concern them.

  • They regret that their establishments are targeted and stigmatized.

“We feel punished collectively, for no reason”.

In Rennes, catering professionals are at a loss.

Summoned to close at 10 p.m. since Monday and the toughening of the prefectural decree supposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus epidemic, the cafeterias are calling for a rally.

Gathered within the collective "We will all toast", 70 owners of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and even some brewers are calling for a demonstration Wednesday at 5 pm Town Hall Square.

“In Bordeaux, Marseille, Paris, Lille, we saw elected officials speak.

In Rennes, we are totally abandoned, ”said Pierre Clolus, owner of the restaurant L'Ambassade and spokesperson for the collective.

In a manifesto drafted in haste Monday evening, the signatories ask to be received by the mayor and the prefect to discuss the measures put in place in recent weeks, providing for the closing at 11 p.m., then at 10 p.m. of bars and restaurants .

“Some have already fallen.

And for others, it's imminent, ”said Eric Billon, boss of Penny Lane, Fox and Friends and Tiffany's.

Both he and his colleagues say they are aware of the need to fight the epidemic, but question their "responsibility".

“We are stigmatized.

But the clusters, they are not in our bars.

We have 20,000 students at Rennes 2 University, crowded subways, but we will target a 20-seat bar located in Gévezé.

We don't understand, ”continues Pierre Clolus.

In Rennes, many medical students enrolled in Rennes 1 would have contracted the virus after parties in the city, the authorities had said.

A few videos of bars where customers danced tightly together also circulated on the Web.

“We have been asking for checks for months, but the first took place ten days ago.

Overflows are in the minority, ”annoys Maxime Samson, owner of P'tit Vélo, one of the few night bars to be still open in the Breton capital.

The owners of bars and restaurants believe they can play a role in regulating flows in the city.

“Come to rue Saint-Michel at 10 pm on a Thursday and you will see.

It's a gigantic party in the street.

The young people don't stop there, they go to apartments crammed into 20 in 20 m².

At least we can enforce barrier gestures, ”say the members of the collective.

Beyond the demonstration scheduled for Wednesday, the collective "We will all toast" has launched a petition and hopes to be received quickly by the mayor and the prefect to negotiate.

"We comply with the requests of the authorities but we want to be able to discuss it".

The contamination figures in the metropolis, even if they seem to be stabilizing, do not work in their favor.

Ille-et-Vilaine remains in red and Rennes is still considered as an enhanced alert zone.
