A #MeToo wave could well sweep over the music industry, amplified by social networks.

#MusicToo, which appeared on Instagram over the summer, is the most talked-about platform.

This anonymous collective, assisted by “lawyers”, collects, via a form, the accounts of victims or witnesses of gender-based and sexual violence until September 30 to “start drawing profiles and collecting complaints”.

31% of women in the medical sector are victims

The goal is that “fear changes sides”.

The statistics are cold in the back: "31% of women working in the music sector (artists or professionals) say they have been victims, at least once, of sexual harassment", according to a 2019 study by Cura (Collectif pour la health of artists and music professionals) and Gam (Guild of music artists).

The existence of #MusicToo took on another dimension in September with the cases of sexual assault -without the platform having had a role to play- concerning Moha La Squale (targeted by an investigation opened after several complaints), Romeo Elvis (who apologized on social networks after accusations on the internet) and Chloé Briot, singer who filed a complaint.

"Balance Your Major"

The Instagram page of "Balance Ta Major", targets it the misdeeds in the big labels and publishes directly testimonies, anonymous.

Other platforms go further, such as DIVA - “Information and resources on sexism and sexual violence in the music industry” - and Change de Disc - “We are fighting against structural problems (remuneration, career progression) & systemic gender-based and sexual violence in music ”.

The two are linked.

"We created an association under the 1901 law to be the bridge between the tons of collectives that exist and to tackle a systemic problem", explains Emily Gonneau (Change de Disc).

She had revealed on the networks a few years ago to have been sexually assaulted and dissuaded by her management at the time from filing a complaint.

"The aggressors do not sleep very well"

“With #MusicToo - I am not behind this platform - the attackers in turn do not sleep very well, it makes things happen, but we have to go further, she continues.

If we only tackle a few cases, it's like the heads of a hydra, it will grow back ”.

In his eyes, “gender-based violence is correlated with pay gaps: it is a fundamental problem”.

"Sexual assault is an abuse of power, so we need checks and balances, we have to go through the system for the system to change, we have to go to the structural", she asserts.
