  • Young people are no longer the only ones affected by the coronavirus epidemic in New Aquitaine, and particularly in Gironde.

  • The incidence rate among those over 75 years old has fallen from 6 to 61 per 100,000 inhabitants, and even exceeds 120 in certain areas of the Gironde.

  • 60% of hospitalizations in Nouvelle-Aquitaine concern people aged 70 or over.

In New Aquitaine, the age group most affected by the coronavirus epidemic at present remains that of 15-44 years.

But young people are no longer the only ones concerned.

"What concerns us particularly is that now this virus affects other age groups, in particular those over 75, since the incidence rate for the latter has increased tenfold in four weeks" stressed Friday the acting director of the ARS, Hélène Junqua.

It went from 6 to 61 per 100,000 inhabitants in the region, between the end of August and the end of September.

"The incidence rate among the elderly is approaching that which justifies going into the maximum alert zone" (100 per 100,000 inhabitants), indicated the prefect Fabienne Buccio, and could even soon exceed 120 in some areas of the Gironde.

174 people hospitalized, including 34 in intensive care

As of September 22, nearly 60% of hospitalizations in Nouvelle-Aquitaine concern people aged 70 or over, notes the ARS.

This figure is particularly scrutinized because it has a direct effect on hospitalizations and the occupancy rate of intensive care beds.

The numbers of hospitalizations, moreover, continue to increase.

“As of September 23, in the Gironde, we had 174 hospitalized people, including 34 in intensive care, and among them 102 are hospitalized at the Bordeaux University Hospital, 25 of which in intensive care.

It is this situation as a whole that has prompted the implementation of new measures in Gironde, such as the closing of bars from 10 p.m. from Monday, as well as the closure of sports halls, gymnasiums, swimming pools (excluding activities schools) and association rooms, the aim being to limit the transmission of the virus, even if the circulation of the epidemic has confirmed a slight slowdown in Gironde in recent days.
