Tang Ximing, deputy head of the Sand Control Forest Farm in Zhongwei City, Ningxia, has used the “five-belt integrated sand fixation system” based on wheatgrass grids to control sand in Ningxia for more than 30 years. The sand fixation system has won the National Science and Technology Special Prize and was awarded by the United Nations Environment Programme. "Global Environmental Protection Top 500" title.

Recently, the reporter went to Zhongwei in Ningxia on the spot to learn about the secrets of sand control by the locals.

Desert control experts and local villagers in Ningxia found through repeated experiments that a 1-meter by 1-meter wheatgrass grid had the best sand fixation effect and the lowest cost.

Tang Ximing introduced that the distance between the gravel being blown by the wind and then falling is no more than 1.05 meters. The wheatgrass stuck in the sand is 15 to 20 centimeters above the ground, which can block the gravel blown by the wind, so that the gravel in the grid is solidified. Living.

Although this system is called a wheatgrass grid, rice straw is used in Ningxia, because the phenological period is short and the income from growing wheat is too low, so farmers use more rice.

The length of the straw used for sand fixation should not be less than 60 cm, and it should be spread vertically on the ground. The straw should not be too thick on the ground, about 1 to 2 cm. Use a shovel to press the straw into the sand and complete the four sides in the same way. A square is formed, and then grass seeds can be planted for afforestation.

In recent years, Zhongwei City in Ningxia has controlled 70,000 to 80,000 mu of sand every year, with an area of 340,000 mu in 6 years.
