Every morning, Nicolas Beytout analyzes political news and gives us his opinion.
This Friday, he is interested in Édouard Philippe.
Left Matignon when he was popular and maybe even because of that, he wants to conserve his capital for the future and prevent any right-wing candidate from emerging too strongly.
This Thursday, Jean Castex was making his first major political show on France 2. During this time, another Prime Minister was speaking, too, but behind closed doors.
This former Prime Minister is the one we talk about the most at the moment and he is also the one who talks the most at the moment: Édouard Philippe.
This Thursday, he was with friends, mayors of big cities.
He will be working this Friday morning in front of a few hundred of them, members of an association founded by the mayor of Angers, Christophe Béchu.
He is someone very representative of this generation of elected officials of 40-50 years, of the moderate right and of the center, close to the field and who wish the success of Emmanuel Macron.
What is certain is that in front of this assembly, Édouard Philippe will be at ease.
Édouard Philippe talks more and more, what is he looking for?
To stay alive in people's minds.
He was taken out of Matignon when he was popular and maybe even because of that.
He wants to conserve his capital for the future.
What is his future?
You know this sentence that was attributed to Pompidou: "the minute you enter Matignon, you think of the Élysée".
Nicolas Beytout would add that, when you are popular, you have even more reasons to do so.
But beware, one of the qualities most recognized in Édouard Philippe, in all opinion studies, is his steel loyalty to Emmanuel Macron.
This is why everyone, his friends and others, thinks he will not go against the President-elect.
That would be betraying a character trait and making lie one of its qualities.
For a politician, this is a very bad calculation for which François Fillon could surely testify.
It will therefore be, perhaps, for much later, except of course if Emmanuel Macron was unable to represent himself.
Until then, he will have a role that he is the only one able to play: to be a pivot between the Republic in March and this part of the right which is looking for a destiny and pawing at not finding it in Les Républicains.
As one of the best observers of the right has said, Édouard Philippe's mission will be to prevent any right-wing candidate from emerging too strongly.
And on the side of the majority party, La République en Marche?
We have already mentioned a few days ago the successive political failures of the President's party.
Rebelote Sunday, where he will still take a jacket in the senatorial elections.
The more time passes, the more we understand that no leading figure will succeed in emerging from this party which, on the contrary, is increasingly "archipelagized".
Moreover, everything happens as if Emmanuel Macron was not interested in it.
There you have it, this young party has already aged.
This leaves a space and a strong political utility to a former Prime Minister who, admittedly, has aged in Matignon but who, in the eyes of the French, remains young.
