It turned out that the rays that had been exhibited for many years at the Kagoshima Aquarium in Kagoshima City were actually a new species.

It is the first time in about 10 years that a new species of yellowtail has been discovered in Japan.

The new species was found to be a group of rays that have been exhibited at the Kagoshima Aquarium for over 20 years since its opening.

Until now, it has been bred as "Giant guitarfish", but I noticed that research groups such as "Kuroshio Biological Research Institute" in Kochi Prefecture have different shapes, and from 3 years ago I proceeded with the investigation by comparing with specimens. By the way, it turned out to be a new species.

This ray is different from the "Giant guitarfish" in that the triangular part of the head is rounded and there are black dots on the left and right chest fins, and the back of the body is pure white and totally white. It was named "Monono Ketone Garisa Katazame" because it looks like a ghost wearing a triangular cloth.

It is the first time in about 10 years that a new species of yellowtail has been discovered in Japan, and the discovery was published in an international academic journal published this month.

Akihiko Yoshida, chief of Kagoshima Aquarium, said, "I'm surprised to find that the rays that I've been breeding for many years were a new species."
